INACTIVE MARKET.
WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE. Few changes and little or no improvement were seen in the New Zealand stock and share markets last week. Government loans were fairly active, but prices showed no appreciation. Local body and company debentures were neglected. The share market was dull and hesitant and trading was inactive, investors maintaining tlieir wait-and-see attitude in view of uncertain conditions overseas. The slight unlift in tlio New York and London markets was scarcely apparent locally. Bank shares received more attention last week, but prices showed no improvement, except in. the cases of National Bank of Now Zealand, which sold at 53s 9d and E.S. and A. _ which touched £5 3s 6d. Australasias were 5s down at £lO 10s. New Zealand remained on the easy
side. There was very little doing in insurance and financial shares, the former selling at steady rates. Goldsbrough Mqrt weakened to 28s. New Zealand industrial issues received lit.lte support, most issues traded being weak. Wellington Woollen ordinaries were quoted below par on Saturday, buyers offering £4 17s, and holders being prepared to quit at £5; for the preference shares, £5 Is was offered. New Zealand Breweries eased from 42s to 41s 3d, and recovered later to 41s 9d. Dominion Breweries rights were traded at from 5s to 4s 9d. Gear Meat sold at 14s 4d, and Now Zealand Refrigerating, 10s paid, cased to 8s Id. Timber' shares were weak, Taupo Totara ordinaries selling at 5s 3d. Wilsons Cement wore 2d down at 17s lOd. Ivaiapoi Wollcn, 17s paid, sold at 10s 3d, and the 7s paid at 3s 9d. Auckland Gas improved to 20s 9d. Weakness was also apparent in several leading Australian industrial issues. Colonial Sugars fell away to £47 2s 6d, as against sales recently at 40s higher. Australian Glass were done at 945, and British Tobacco at from 49s 6d to 495. Broken Hill Proprietary failed to better 58s 9d. Australian metal shares were quiet and showed no improvement. Chain and other retail stores were quiet. G. J. Coles recovered from 78s lOd to 79s 9d, and Woolworths (Sydney) were a little bettor. McKenzies Department Stores sold at 64s a decline of Is. Selfridges (Australasia) were done at 16s 6d, and Solfridge (N.Z.) at 6s 3d. Taranaki Oil developed some activity and advanced sharply from 11s lOd to 14s. Moturoa Oil were quiet and unchanged.
