The expedition ship Nimrod was being overhauled at Lyttelton preparatory to returning to the Antarctic in December. Thrushes and blackbirds had wrought so much damage at Foxton that the Mayor (Mr B. Gower) had offered a prize for the boys exhibiting the largest collections of eggs at the local Horticultural Show. Mr J. C. Williamson’s “Humpty Dumpty” company had been scheduled to appear in Palmerston North for two nights. Land values were booming in the Ohakune district, and £6OO had been paid for a quarter-acre section. , There were signs of a complete breakdown in the oats market owing to the absence of demand and a, series of forced sales.
