TRAINS HELD UP.
FAULT IN ELECTRIC UNIT,
I Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 25. Because a multiple-unit electric train on the recently-inaugurated service between Wellington and Johnsonville developed mechanical trouble m ‘the Wellington railway yards late this afternoon traffic on the electrified section was dislocated for more than an hour. The breakdown occurred on the 4.22 p.m. train from Wellington and coincided with the peak period when the electric service is scheduled to operate at 12-minute intervals. While the engineers wrestled with the complicated internal organs of the stationary train, seven buses hastily commissioned were brought into service and hundreds of passengers were conveyed to and from the suburbs of Ngaio, 'Khandallah and Johnsonville. The hold-up caused a temporary suspension of the entire service. Three other multiple-units—one at Johnsonville, another at Khandallah and a third at Ngaio—were unable to proceed and the inward-bound passengers were transferred to buses. The service was eventually restored with the departure of the 5.35 p.m. tram ■ from Wellington and in the meantime a steam locomotive had towed the rerractory unit back to its depot.
