PRISON PAYMENTS.
TOO LOW TO BUY JAM. LONDON, Aug. 8. Criticism of the payment system recently introduced in the women’s prison at Holloway, London, was made recently by a woman who had just served a year’s sentence. ‘‘Women are doing 3800 ft of sewing for a wage of 3d,” she said, “and are unable to do enough work to earn adequate money for the luxury of a pot of. jam.”
“When the scheme came into operation our hopes were high,” she declared. “Everyone was excited and worked hard, hoping to earn the top wage of lid. But there was disappointment in store for many of them. They couldn’t choose their own work, and it is easier for some categories to earn than for others. "■ Those in the sewing department, for instance, found that it was often impossible to complete enough sacks or puttes or dresses to earn more than 2d: “We 'thought we should be able to buy loose jam, say. in twopsnnyuvorths, but the jam was 5d a jar.”-
