PERSONAL.
Professor B. E. Murphy, of Victoria University College, Wellington, was a visitor to Palmerston North last evening, and left early this morning tor Napier. In the House of Representatives, yesterday, four days’ leave of absence was granted to Mr D. W. Coleman (Gisborne) and one day to Dr D. G.McMillan (Dunedin West) both on account of illness in the family.
Visiting Palmerston North as managers of the primary schools Rugby teams, which are participating in the annual tournament, are Messrs J. Lamason, and F. C. Rockell (Wellington), L. Keedwell and Kennedy (Masterton) and F. C. Jannings and J., Ward (Wanganui).
After being two and a-lialf months in Australia Rev. Father J. L. Page, principal of the School for the Deaf, Montreal, passed through Auckland on his way back to Canada. The purpose of Father Page’s visit was to give courses in lip-reading instruction and speech training to sisters of the - Dominican Order and Christian Brothers, who conduct schools for the deaf in Australia. ,
Recently appointed Consul-General for Germany in New Zealand, Air. Ernst C. Ramin is expected at "Wellington on August 30. He succeeds Dr W. Hellenthal, who left Wellington some months ago to return to Germany. Mr Ramm has for the last six years been stationed in the Foreign Office in Berlin. He lias previously held diplomatic posts in the German consular service in Madrid, Tokio and Mexico.
The desire of Sir Alexander Young to resign from the position of supervising dental surgeon to the Auckland Hospital Board at the end of the present financial year was intimated in a report to the Hospital Board x says a Press Association message. Sir Alexander, who was Minister of Health in the Coates and Coalition Governments, was appointed to his present post in December, 1935, shortly after being defeated for the Hamilton seat which he had held in Parliament since 1923.
Before proceeding with the usual business of the House of Representatives, yesterday, the Leader of the Opposition (Hon. A. r.HariiilitQD-)-' said that, on behalf of his party, hi? wished to express to the Government their genuine regret and sympathy at the illness of the Prime Minister. (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) and the hope that lie would soon be back again i n the House. Replying on behalf of the Government, the Minister of. Education (Hon. P. Fraser) thanked the Opposition for the expression of. sympathy and said he was pleased to report that the Prime Minister-had now practically recovered from liis indisposition.
