Spilman, manager, in a happy speech, spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Jarrett’s sendees, and of the cordial relationship existing- between the abattoir staff and the meat inspectors. On concluding his speech the manager presented Mr J arret t with a gold-mounted fountain pen as a token of esteem from the abattoir staff. Mr Jarrett replied feelingly, and said that though he regretted leaving old friends .he would not be going far away. He thanked all present for their beautiful gift and kind wishes. A happy vein was introduced into the function by the rendering of two comic numbers by Mr J. Downing and Mr T. Young. A feature of the function was the brilliant tap dancing executed by Master Joseph Dempsey, a lad who promises well in this art. Each of the entertainers was accompanied by Mr M. Baigent on his ukulele, and the singing of “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” brought the gathering to a close.
