SPRING IN THE APIARY
■ BEEKEEPERS’ MEETING. There was a gratifyingly large attendance at a meeting, on Monday, of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Beekeepers’ Association, held at Massey College. Mr F. J. Lewin was in the chair. Arrangements were made for a programme of activities to occupy the attention of the branch until next Janu~ary, including meetings and field days, the latter to be held at the apiary atMassey College. The branch decided to lend assistance to newly formed branches at Marton and Levin, arrangements being made for the attendance of members of the Manawatu branch at the meetings of,the other two in order to strengthen the interest and add to the exchange of ideas in discussions.
The apiary instructor at Palmerston North, Mr H. F. Dodson, gave a lecture on colony strength and spring management. He touched on the opening: up of hives for spring inspections, what the beekeeper requires to look for and recognise, and the necessity for visualising the development of the hives in the immediate future in order to provide for their growth to a position where they are at the requisite strength for work at the commencement of the honey flow. There was a general discussion at the close of the lecture and a number of questions were asked.
In order to give as satisfactory a range of questions as possible, it was urged that members write out questions as points occur to them between meetings and forward them to the instructor, who will reply to them at the following meeting.
