JAPAN’S AIM

NO FRESH VENTURES YET. IN SOUTH PACIFIC. EMINENT AUTHORITY’S VIEW. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 22. “I cannot see how Japan is in a position to embark on fresh adventures in New Zealand or Australia,” said Sir John Pratt, formerly adviser to the Foreign Office on Far Eastern affairs, who arrived in Auckland to-day, in an interview.

“A totally different position would arise if Japan succeeded in her efforts to control China. Then there would be very little doubt that she would look farther afield and become a serious menace to this part ot the world, but that is not on the horizon at present.” „ . Sir John added that be was lairly sure that Russia would not take part in the fighting, but would continue to assist China with supplies. The British Government was very sympathetic towards China and was anxious to give any possible assistance.
