Y.M.C.A. HARRIERS
WIN FOR J SCOTT. The Y.M.C.A. Harriers held a handicap race over the championship course on Saturday afternoon. The paddocks were easily the wettest encountered so far this season, and the times were slower than the previous week’s. All the runners, however, showed improved form. There were 17 starters, of whom 15 completed the course. At the end of three miles K. Woodd (lOmin) was leading J. Worley (Zimin) by 100yds. Then came J. Spall, S. MeVicar, A. New lands, C. Holmes and L. Ryan. The next to complete the first lap were H. AlcDonald (4min 25sec), J. Scott and L. Hawthorne (3min oOsec), with S. Oxenham (.‘himin), D. AlcCardle (3) min) and C. MeVicar (3min..sosec) another 30yds back. The back markers, N. Hearsey (imin) and K. Galloway (2min 25sec) were running together, with C. Weller (scratch) still trailing the field. They had made up a lot of ground on the limit men.
Going into the paddocks the second time J. Scott, who was running excellently, was leading H. McDonald in second and third positions respectively with S. MeVicar, J. Spall and another bunch headed by J. Worley and L. Hawthorne close behind. Scott and McDonald caught K. Woodd along the deviation, and Scott continued to draw away gradually to win from AlcDonald by over 50yds, with Spall 20yds back third. The next 10 runners finished in [within the next 300yds. Scott ran his "best race to date and should do well at the West Coast championships next week. AlcCardle, AlcDonald, Hawthorne and Oxenham also ran well. C. AVeller again returned fastest time. He is at the peak of his form just now and should retain his AVest Coast title. N. Hearsey returned second fastest time and maintained the excellent form he has shown in the last four races. J. Spall and iS. AlcVicar ran well over the last three miles and J. AYorley ran his best race this season. Iv. Woodd and L. Ryan continue to improve gradually. Worley (7min 30sec), 43min 30sec, 8: N. Hearsey (lmin 30sec), 37min 35sec, 9; S. Oxenham (3miti 25sec). 39min 40sec, 10: C. Weller (scr.). 36min 20sec, 11 ; L. Ryan (6min 30sec), 43min os-ec, 12. sec, 1: N. Hearsey, 37min 35sec, 2. The following will represent the club at the West Coast championships commencing from the Y.AI.C.A. at 2.30 p.m. next Saturday. A team: S. Oxenham (capt.), C. Weller, N. Hearsey, Iv. Galloway, R. Lamberton and J. Scott. B team : C. AlcVicar (capt.), D. AlcCardle, L. Hawthorne, H. McDonald, J. Spall and S. MeVicar. J. Worley will run as an individual. The teams should give a good account of themselves, although Marton will be very formidable in the A grade. The B team should he able to hold its own against the visiting clubs, although C. AlcVicar is somewhat unreliable just now owing to a knee injury.
