ATHLETIC DISPLAY.

DEFEAT FOR A. R. GEDDES. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Aug. 21. L. Dickinson, a young St. Kilda runner, caused something of a sensation when he beat the title-holder and Empire Games representative, A. R. Geddes, in the Otago cross-country championship at Wingatui on Saturday. Dickinson won by 300 yards in the fast time of 35min. 13 l-sseo. Curtis was third. The junior title went to It. Martin (Tokomairiro) with L. Gerrie (Caversham) second. Both the senior and junior teams races went to the Civil Service Club.

The New Zealand Universities crosscountry championship was held after the Otago events, and resulted in a good win for Otago University, which scored 23 points to Auckland’s 34. Victoria, the 1937 champion, was third with 34 points and Canterbury scored 49. Individual honours went to D. E. Serymgeour (Victoria), wityty. A. G. Ivofoed (Auckland) second . and D. Foord (Otago) third. The time for the race was 37min. 40sec. The Carmalt Jones Cup for the South Island premiership also went to Otago by a margin of 11 points.
