GEM OF GOTHIC ART. —The chief glory of Cologne is the magnificent Cathedral of St. Peter which is considered by many to be the most splendid example of Gothic architecture in the world. The Cathedral was begun in 1248 but for over three hundred years the church was allowed to fall into decay until the 19th centum when it was restored and completed to its original design.
