OBITUARY

MR J. S. MUNRO. The death occurred at Napier on Saturday of Mr J. S. Munro, who for many years was a resident of Palmerston North. The deceased gentleman, who was 71 years of age, was born in Scotland and arrived in New Zealand in 1885, immediately settling in Palmerston North, where lie joined the office staff of the contracting firm of his brothers, known as Munro Bros. Later he was employed by the late Mr C. M. Ross and subsequently entered business on his own account as an auctioneer. After a number of years he joined the staff of H. L. Young’s, Ltd., and about 14 years ago he left Palmerston North to open a branch for the firm in Napier He later purchased the business and had conducted it up to the time of his death. The late Mr Munro was held in the highest esteem and took a very active interest in all movements for good. For many years he was. an elder of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and a superintendent of-the Sunday school. He was one of the prime movers m the scheme to erect the memorial Sunday school which now faces Ashley Street. Mr Munro was also -a very enthusiastic member of the Order of Rechabites. He is survived bv .his widow, three sons and two daughters—Messrs Ronald ’Munro ' (Napier), William Munro (Wanganui), Kenneth Munro (Opunake), Mrs Jackson (Oamaru) and Miss Jean Munro (Napier). The eldest son John was killed in the Great AA ar. Two brothers, members of the old contracting firm in Palmerston North, live in Taihape. One is Mr William Munro, aged 90, and the other is Mr Alexander Munro, aged 84.
