CHINESE HOLD ON.
LANDING REPULSED. • SHANGHAI. June 30. The Chinese holding Matang forts are still clinging to their positions despite the mud walls crumbling under the Japanese artillery and naval bombardment.
The spokesman claims that the Chinese repulsed Japanese landing parties, shells from the big guns directly hitting the steel pontoons which were packed with troops. Other pontoons were blown up by mines.

The Chinese admit the loss of tlie Matung boom, but are assembling troops to oppose the Japanese advance westward along the south bank of the Yangtse-kinng River.
