GAS SERVICES.

RELAYING OF MAINS. In a report presented to a meeting of the Palmerston Nprth City Council, last evening, by the works committee, it was stated that Cr. W. B. Tennent, I chairman of tho lighting l committee, had explained the position in regard, to a subsidy being available from the Department of Labour for men engaged on the relaying of gas mains. The gas manager (Mr J. Learmonth) had' requested permission to purchase 110 chains of 18in main to replace the existing 12in main from the gasworks to Albert Street, utilising the main lifted therefrom for the replacement of mains in other parts of the city, finance being available from the depreciation fund for the purpose. The matter had . been considered by the lighting committee, which had recommended that the scheme be proceeded with. Cr. Tennent also stated that it would be necessary to instal a trunk main in College Street, provided finance was available. The report stated that it had been decided that the proposals of the lighting committee, as outlined by Cr. Tennent, be approved and that the gas manager be authorised to order the necessary pipes immediately and to proceed with the work. This decision was endorsed by the council last evening.
