WAR DEBT PAYMENTS

UNITED STATES ATTITUDE.* BY GOODS OR MONEY. HOW TO SETTLE QUESTION. .(United Press Association —By Electric Telegflaph.—Copyright.) Received June 27, 8.5 a.m. NEW HAVEN (Conn.), June 26. Dr Irving Fisher, Professor of Political Economy at Yale University, in an interview, did not favour the proposal that, the United States should come as near to the cancellation of European war debts as public opinion would permit. “I personally do not object to absolute cancellation, but, due to public opinion, this is out of the question,’ said Dr Fisher. “I suggest reducing or abolishing interest and spreading payment over at least 62 more years. This might create • a better understanding and help Mr Cordell Hull to get the sanction of public opinion behind reciprocal agreements. I agree with Mr Hull that any stimulus m international trade will be helpful to our domestic economy. If Europe is really to pay she must pay in goods, but the tariff does not permit that. When we think in terms of money we want Europe to pay, but in terms of rroods we do not want her to pay. V e must either reduce the tariff or cancel our debts.”
