ALLEGED FRAUD.

LARGE SUM INVOLVED. LONDON, June Frank Thomas Gray and James Edward Barlow have been eommitteed for trial on a charge of haying attempted the theft of £25,000 from Francis Fuller McKenzie, by means of a trick, while one of them was “taking the waters at Bath.” A further charge was brought later of having forged and uttered documents. Accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved their defence. Gray was charged separately with having forged a document purporting to be a banknote for £BOOO.

The prosecution described how Barlow, “taking the waters” at the same hotel, met McKenzie, who had retired to Bath because of ill-health. Gray met them in the street and produced what apepared to be a newspaper cutting hearing a photograph of himself, and a description of his “huge transactions” in New York.

The whole document was a fogery, the prosecution alleged. Barlow tokl McKenzie, referring to a “£54,000 deal in francs,” that a bank manager had said that each must doposit £25)000 to demonstrate that they could stand the loss if the deal fell through. McKenzie then became suspicious and informed the police.
