OBITUARY.

MR EDMUND GOODBEHERE. There passed away at liis residence, “Northfield,” Kimbolton Road, Feilding, yesterday morning, Mr Edmund Goodbehere, at the age of 83 years; His passing removed one who had been associated with the activities of Feilding and district for almost 60 years, during which period Mr Goodbehero had seen Feilding grow from a village to its present proportions. Until recently Mr Goodbehere had enjoyed good health, but three weeks ago he developed pneumonia, passing away yesterday morning. >'• *y . * - Born in Handsworth, Warwickshire, England, m-,1854, Mr Goodbehere w r as a son of the late Mr Samuel Goodbehere; a solicitor, and was educated at Stony Stratford School, and.also privately. He came to New Zealand with hie parents in 1880, being then Settling in Feilding just six years after the founding- of the town, Mr Goodbehere soon after his arrival became engaged in business interests associated with the opening up of the back country out of Feilding. In 1881 he joined the Manchester Itifles and served in the Parihaka trouble with many other volunteers from the district, f He became a member of the Borough Council ’in 1880_ and served on the council for a quarter of a century, being for twelve years Mayor. Elected

first as Mayor in 1892, Mr Goodbehere served from 1897 to 1904, and again from 1930 to 1913. During his regime many important municipal undertakings were, launched, and among these •were the sewerage system, water supply and the municipal abattoir. He represented Feilding on the Palmerston North Hospital Board for a number of years and was chairman of the board at the turn of the' century. Mr Goodbehere was a foundation member of,the Ffeilding A. and P. Association, and was president of that organisation in >1903. He also acted as treasurer for’ a year, and; was a vicepresident of the Manawatu A. and P. Association in 1898. For 24 years he .iva's a member of. the Oroua Licensing Committee, retiring-in-1930. As a Justice of the Peace he often took local Court sittings a.nd at the time of his death was district Coroner. Mr Goodbehere was secretary of the Feilding Jockey Club for over 40 years, and after retiring from that position was elected president of the club. He .was a delegate to the Racing Conference, and was also a member of the Wanganui District Committee ’ School committee work also engaged Mr Goodbeliere’s attention, and he served periods on both the Manchester Street and Lytton Street School Committees. He was a foun-dation-member of the Feilding Club., Bowling and athletics were amongst the sports Mr Goodbehere found interest in, he having been a founda-

tion member of the Oroua Bowling Club. Mr Goodbehere was the Feilding Aero Club’s first president. Mr Goodbehere was a loyal and enthusiastic member of St. John’s Anglican Church, and was a synodsman. The business of the Feilding Perma-' nent Building and Investment Society occupied a great deal of Mr Goodbehere’s time, he with others, having promoted the society : he was manager of the organisation . for over 40 years. . •' Mr* Goodbehere’s marriage took place at St. John’s Anglican Church in 1885 to Elizabeth, daughter of Major Liddle, of the Scots Greys. Mrs Goodbehere predeceased her husband ten years ago, and there are left to survive his passing, two sons and a daughter as well as a sister, Mrs Liddle, who recently celebrated her 9dtli birthday, and a brother, Mr F. Goodbehere, both of whom reside in Feilding. The sons are Mr Guy Goodbhehere, of Feilding, and Mr Wilfred Goodbehere, of England. One son, Mr Brian Goodbehere, made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. The daughter is Mrs H. Shepherd, of Colyton. There is also a grandson, Master Brian, son of Mr and Mrs~Guy Goodbehere. To all of the relatives the sympathy of many friends will be extended. ■
