FOUND DEAD.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 24.
Mystery surrounds the death of an elderly man, Thomas Withey, whose body was found on the beach at Okahu Bay, Orakei, this morning. Though he had apparently been drowned there were no signs of violence on the body and there were indications of bleeding from the eyes, nose and mouth. Detectives took charge of the inquiry, and the group on the beach attracted hundreds of people travelling to the city. Though the police were inclined to the belief that the cause of death was drowning, the presence of blood was puzzling. The identity of the man was discovered by a detective making a round of boardinghouses in the city. At the inquest the proprietress of an apartment house said deceased was aged about 58 and had recently stopped at her place. She last saw him on Monday, when he was in good health and spirits.
