EMPHATIC DENIAL.

PURCHASE. OF STORES. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 23. An emphatic denial that the Government was contemplating the purchase of the Self-Help businesses was given by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), his statement being prompted by a telegram from Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P. for Napier, to the effect that absurd but persistent rumours were current and asking for a formal denial. “People will persist in saying stupid things,” said Mr Savage. “We have not the slightest thought of purchasing the Self Help or any other stores. All the purchasing we want to do wc have done.” . TIMBER MILL’S PLIGHT. Per Press Association. • \ GISBORNE, June 23. A statement that a timber mill which he opened at Motuhora might have to be closed because of a shortage of skilled labour was made to-day by Mr F. W. Peddle.

Mr Peddle explained that be kept operations going at heavy financial cost to himself and unless labour problems were solved in the near future he would have to shut down, a step he was reluctant to take. It would mean loss of employment to approximately 20 men. Skilled labour was not obtainable for the mill. He had applied to the State Placement Service, which had made inquiries throughout the Dominion without success.
