WEST END

PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION. I IMPROVEMENTS SOUGHT. Mr A. Penketh presided over a meeting, last evening, of the executive of the West End Progressive Association. The other members'present were Messrs W. Schwabe (secretary), H. Bovis, F. J. Melhuish, P. S. Skeates, L. W. D. McEwen, A. Phillips, J. Dalziell, M. Cavanagh and A.. \V. Just. In December last the secretary wrote to the Main Highways Board suggesting that as the main road between Longburn and the city boundary was under construction it would be a good opportunity for the board to form a cycle track along the route. No reply having been received, a copy of the letter was sent last month-to the Minister of Public Works and the latter had recently replied that he would look into the question and advise the association. A letter had also been written recently to the City Council drawing attention to the height of the fence at the corner of West and Main Streets, and pointing out that this constituted an obstruction to traffic and a source of danger to motorists and cyclists. The town clerk replied that the matter had been referred to the engineering department to submit a plan and report thereon to, the works of the council. The question of-canvassing for new members was discussed, and arrangements were referred to the secretary. The co-operation of the ladies is to be sought. A suggestion by Mr Skeates that a pamphlet be issued setting out the aims and objects of the association, and the work it has already done, was favourably received. Mr Skeates offered to defray the incidental cost of-the pamphlet, and he was thanked for his assistance. It was mentioned that there were overhanging trees in Ferguson Street and Botanical Road, and the matter was left to members of the committee to deal with. It was decided to request the City Council to grade and metal a. track from West Street to Cook Street, also that the council be asked to carry out the tar-sealing of Thompson Avenue, South Street, and College Street and, further, to provide a pedestrian crossing at the railway line from Main Street to the West Street corner. Other requests were that all telegra.ph posts at street corners should be painted white, and that better lighting facilities be provided for West End. In order to foster the social atmosphere and to raise funds for the association, it was agreed to hold a card party at a.n early date.
