AUSTRALIA’S PURCHASE. FOR LONG-DISTANCE ROUTES. LONDON, April 20. Criticism here of Australia’s purchase of American aeroplanes for longdistance commercial services is recalled by the decision of British Airways to acquire four Lockheed aeroplanes from the United States, costing £70,000, for the London-West Africa route. It was stated a few years ago that Australia should have purchased British machines despite the fact that none of those manufactured were suitable for long distances, but vindication of the Commonwealth’s policy appeared in the Cadman report, which admitted the non-existence of long-distance British commercial aircraft. The announcement in connection with Britain’s purchase says: “It is not our policy to purchase foreign aircraft, hut the only alternative is the postponement of the development of routes exploited by foreign companies. ’
