EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 22, 1908. In nn address in the Mayorai campaign Mr J. A. Nash had said that he was in favour of the erection of swimming baths in the town. He also considered that the little muddy lane running from Church Street along the side of the Opera House should be made into a street. A half-holiday poll in Woodville had given a decisive verdict for Wednesday. Only five votes had been cast in favour of Saturday. The average number of patients in the Palmerston North Hospital during March had been 40. During the first three months of the year PRO assisted immigrants had entered New South Wales. The Post and Telegraph Department had advised the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce that it could not see its way clear to provide telephone communication with Pohangina. A splendid type of ryegrass had been grown in the Sandon district, some of the seed giving as much as 341 b. to the bushel. It had been anticipated that seed from Sandon would become very popular.
