FRONTIERSMEN IN CAMP.

EASTER AT POHANGINA. The Manawatu (N) Squadron of tire Legion of Frontiersmen appeared in a new role during the Easter week-end. They were called upon twice within a few hours to repair slips on the road, and this they did very effectively. It was at tlie tenth annual camp of the squadron, belli at Ngaputani, Pohangina. The advance party arrived in camp last Thursday morning and most of the tents had already been pitched and connected with electric light. Friday morning broke fine, but before breakfast was over heavy rain began to fall. Tlie programme of the camp usually consists mainly of rifle shooting, but rain interfered with this to a great extent. Between showers, however, some very good scores were registered. Easter Monday was devoted to competition, the Whariti troop winning the teams’ cup by a margin of two points from the city troop. Frontiersman Rowbotham was the highest scorer, registering 98 out of the possible 105. One afternoon a car on its way from town was held up by a slip at a point about a mile from the camp.* A party from tlie camp immediately proceeded to the scene and, armed with shovels, vigorously set to work and had the road clear again in a very short time. There was a recurrence of the slip next day, and again the Frontiersmen appeared to good advantage in the role of road-menders. On botli occasions several carloads of local residents were held up and would not have been able to have got through but for the prompt assistance of the Frontiersmen. Owing to the weather conditions the church service parade which is usually held on the Sunday afternoon had to be cancelled. The camp broke up on Monday' afternoon. The camp personnel'comprised Lieutenant D. A. Honore (who was in charge), Staff-Lieut. J. L. C. Merton, M.C., as adjutant; Sergt.-Major T. J. O’Brien; Q.M.S. W. R. Taylor (camp cook) and Pioneer A. T. Whitehead. The visitors in camp included Commandant J. C. Findlater, of Hawera, officer commanding the Legion in New Zealand, and six members of K. Squadron, Masterton, under Lieut. Johnson.
