Y.M.C.A. HARRIERS.
Jii reviewing the activities of the second year of the Y.M.C.A. Harrier Club, the report states that a very satisfactory season had been experienced. The membership and keenness were retained throughout the season. Two teams of six men visited Dannevirke on June 12 to participate in the North Island harrier rally. The A team won the B grade against strong opposition. Eight members journeyed to Mkistcrtnn for the jubilee of the Masterton Harrier Club on May 15. C. Weller won the five-mile scratch race and S. Oxenham a consolation prize. Inter-club races were. held against Marton, Wanganui and Dannevirke clubs. Two teams of five men were entered in the A and B grade championships at Marton on August 28.# The results were:—A grade: Marton, 14 (joints, 1; Palmerston North, 42 points, 2. B grade: ■Wanganui, 90 points, 1; Palmerston North and Marton, 92 points, equal, 2. “We desire to congratulate Marton and Wanganui, and C. Weller on again winning the West Coast title,” the report adds. “He also won the senior championship, and A. Langley the junior. J. Wood won the trophy donated by Mr C. P. Nash for the cross-country race at Mr T. Venn’s residence, and C. McVicar the /Hopwood trophy for the first to finish in the Ashhurst-Whakarongo handicap road race. I. Itanford, S. Oxenham, and C. Holmes also won handicap races. C. McVicar and K. Galloway also performed well in the WangaehuWanganui race, finishing second and fifth respectively. The club was very fortunate to obtain the services of Mr Charles .Weller, New Zealand champion, who was transferred from Wanganui prior to the commencement of the season. The club’s finances are fairly satisfactory. An increase of 8s 6d is shown above* last year’s credit balance of £1 19s 10d deposited at the Y.M.C.A. The account at the Post Office shows a credit balance of £8 3s lOd. The total income last season amounted to £2B 9s lOd, compared with £5 14s Gel the previous season. Throughout the season the attendance at the weekly runs was very encouraging, the average being about 15 runners every Saturday. In all, 24 runs were held. The club desires to place on record the excellent service rendered by Mr W. Fairburn. We regret to report the departure from this district of Messrs L. Dawkins and T. Venn, both enthusiastic members, whose help and advice will be missed.”
