DEFENCE OF FRANCE. PARIS, March 6. Tho Chamber of Deputies and the Senate have passed the Defence Investment Fund Bill. It is expected that a £100,000,000 loan will shortly be launched. HUNGARY’S .PROGRAMME. ARMS AND SOCIAL WORKS. BUDAPEST, March 5. The Premier announces a five-year programme of rearmament and social improvement costing £40,000,000, of which £24,000,000 is being raised by a capital levy. ITALIAN ESTIMATES. INCREASE OF £1,500,000. ROME, March 5. Tho Naval Estimates for 1938-39 are equivalent to £23,000,000, an increase of £1,5(10,000 on last year. It does not cover the new construction of ships. Ships at present _ being constructed comprise four 35,000-ton battleships, 24 large destroyers, 16 tor-pedo-boats and more than 30 submarines, of which 83 are already in service. A POWERFUL WEAPON. Speaking at Cambridge to-day Air Chief Marshal Sir Cyril Newall (chief of the Air Staff) said that the Royal Air Force now had bombers and lighters of as high performance as any air force in the world. “We are forging an extremely powerful weapon, which God forbid it will ever be necessary to use.”
