FLOOD FATALITIES.
140 KNOWN DEAD. CALIFORNIAN DISASTER. LOS ANGELES, March o. With 140 known dead and the missing listed at 97, further details may bring the flood fatalities in excess,of 300. Many communities are still isolated. The water broke through a canal five miles north of Fresno, threatening to inundate the city and presenting a new obstacle in the search for the missing airliner which is believed to have crashed. Fresno is 200 miles north-west of Los Angeles, far removed from the South California Hood area.
The population of Los Angeles was again terrified last evening when thunder boomed and rain began to fall. Hundreds who had returned to their lialf-fiooded homes fled back to the municipal auditorium, where they had been refugees for two whole days, but forecasts were broadcast that the rain was merely local. The weather was clear to-day. The fate of 500 people marooned in isolated mountain communities is not certain, despite attempts by aeroplanes to make contact with the area. A hundred towns in the stricken area have all been badly hit. The dead in Los Angeles alone total 13. The cinema studios are rapidly returning to normal despite their huge losses.
