GIRL GUIDES.
ANNUAL SWIMMING SPORTS. In spite of the cold and blustery weather on Saturday, there was a good attendance at the annual swimming sports of the Palmerston North Girl Guides’ Association, which were field at the Girls’ High School baths. .Mrs A. E. Mansford and Mrs J. A. Nash, two vice-presidents of the association, were present, also a number of parents and friends of tbo Guides. The companies represented were: First Palmerston North, St. Paul's, Shannon, Takaro and Rongotea (Guides), Hokowhitu, All Saints’ and St. Paul’s (Brownie packs) and the Second Palmerston North Rangers. Mrs Ivan Wilson (acting-commis-sioner) .acted as judge, assisted by Misses G. Hands and E. Helsbv. The programme was run through without loss of time, those on duty being Misses I. Stewart (starter), R. Jensen (blackboard steward), L. l>avis and Z. Morton (recording stewards). J. Woodward (gate steward). Mrs Tidrlv and Misses A. Grev, l’ica.rd and M. Finney lent valuable assistance in various other capacities. Messrs E. V. Spear and S. J. Carr judged the diving events and the long plunge.
Hot drinks were enjoyed by the swimmers, and a buffet afternoon lea served during a brief interval in tbe programme was greatly appreciated. At the close of the sports programme an adjournment was made to the quadrangle for the presentation of prizes. Mrs Wilson thanked parents and friends for their attendance; the Guides and Brownies for putting on such a fine programme; the High Schools Board and Miss E. Stephens for the use of the baths, the two vicepresidents for their interest, and the parents who had acted as judges. Regret was expressed that Mr Fisher, who was to have judged the diving events, was indisposed. In the, absence of the president (Mrs C. King), who sent an apology, the prizes were presented by Mrs A. E. Mansford. The rose bowl for the company with the highest number ot points w°nt to Takaro, who were well in the lead with 58 points, First Palmerston North being runners-up with 15 points. Jill Reed (company lender) received the rose-bowl. The senior championship was won by B. Spear, with B. Stevens runner-up. and the junior championship by J. Barkwith, with P. Snelling runnerup. At the conclusion of the prize-giv-ing Miss Stewart called for cheers for the executive. She also thanked Mrs Wilson and nil who had helped in any way to make the day so enjoyable. Cheers were then given for Mrs Mansford.
