CANOE CAPSIZES

YOUNG MAN DROWNED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 6. In full view of hundreds of picnickers at Milford. Beach this afternoon a young man was drowned when a small canoe overturned about a hundred yards from the beach. The victim was Trevor Windsor, aged 17, of Takapuna, a butcher’s assistant. AVith another young man Windsor had hired .a canoe a few minutes previously and it capsized on a small reef laid bare by the exceptionally low tide. His companion swam ashore, but AA’indsor disappeared, in the strong ebb tide. Six members of the Milford Girls’ Surf Club dashed into the water fully clad and made a search for tli3 body without success. BATHING FATALITY. FARMER CARRIED OUT. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. March 6. AA ? hile bathing at the north end of Waikouaiti beach this morning Donald Alexander Smith, a dairy farmer, aged 44, was carried beyond his depth by the exceptionally heavy seas and drowned. His plight was noticed by others on the beach and unsuccessful efforts were made by a swimmer and a man on horseback to reach him. The body was recoverd later by two swimmers, who noticed it about 400yds out. Smith, who was a. returned soldier, was a married man with two children, aiid was a resident of AA r aikouaiti.
