STERLING EXCHANGE INCREASES. STATE DEPOSITS HIGHER. The weekly statement of assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as at the close of business on Monday, February 28, is as follows: — LIABILITIES.

Proportion of reserve (No. 7 less _ No. 5) to notes and ether demand liabilities, 68.804 per cent., compared with 68.486 per cent, on February 21. Sterling exchange is building up again, this week’s total of £17,248,505 showing a further increase of £575.901. Gold remains at £2,801,791. Subsidiary coin at £215,955 shows a reduction of £1522. Advances to the Primary Products Marketing Department show a decrease of £285,209, tiro 'total amoun now being £5,973,921. Advances to the State for other purposes now total £1,300,000, an increase of £200,000. Investments 'amount to £2,970,623, an increase of £10,629. Other assets at £324,289 show an increase of £205,634. The note issue shows a further small decline of £17,667. Demand liabilities to the State at £7,092,068 show a large increase of £2,168,600. The trading banks’ reserve balance amounting to £8,168,958 has decreased by £1,205,310. Other demand liabilities at £107,670 are

lower by £240,102. Other liabilities show little change. The statement balances at £30,835,084; an increase of £705,432.
