REPERTORY SOCIETY.
OPENING OF 1938 SEASON. The 1938 season of the Palmerston North Repertory Society was opened last evening with the presentation of a rehearsed reading of a most entertaining comedy. There was a large audience, which showed much appreciation of the efforts of the players. Mr M. N. Wallace was the producer and those who took part, in addition to Mr Wallace, were Misses Muriel Richards, Mavis Mortlanl, Messrs H. Palmer and J. Birnie. At the conclusion, the president (Mr M. H. Oram) expressed pleasure at seeing so many present, which, he hoped, was a happy augury for the future. The season would be a very important one in as much as the first stage production was to take place in the Opera House, which would involve greater expense and greater responsibility. The play chosen, “Queen’s Husband,” was an entertaining comedy and should make a wide appeal. The speaker expressed the hope that members and friends would rally round. A strong cast had been gathered and the fact that Mr F. Cousins was the producer was a guarantee of a high standard of production. Mr Oram expressed regret at the impending loss of several old and trusted members in Mr Wallace, who was going to Auckland, Mr T. W. Henderson, who was removing to Wellington and Mr Birnie, but he hoped others would come forward to replace them. It was fitting that Mr Wallace bad been the producer for that evening’s presentation, but his departure would be a great loss to the society for which ho had worked so hard. On behalf of the executive, Mr Oram expressed the hope that the members would enjoy this coming season and support it as well as the last. Supper was served by the ladies committee under the direction of Mrs J. Davidson.
