PALMERSTON SEAT

MR HODGENS THE LABOUR CANDIDATE. The Palmerston North Labour Representation Committee supplies the following:—At the last meeting of the Palmerston North Labour Representation Committee final consideration was given to the choice of a Labour candidate to contest the next general election for this electorate. Only one nomination was received and it speaks volumes for the respect and esteem in which the sitting member Mr J. Hodgens is held that his nomination has been unanimously endorsed by all of the 20 affiliated organisations which comprise the party in Palmerston North, 6ave one or two smaller unions whose meetings are irregular and whose endorsement is so far unofficial.

This well deserved appreciation of unionists and others for the manner in which Mr Hodgens has represented this electorate during the present term certainlv augurs well for his success in Labour’s interests next November.

It was decided to commence , work in the municipal election campaign, and a series of street meetings was planned to start immediately. These will be held when possible on Saturday mornings, in the Square, although the actual place may vary, it being the committee’s desire to cooperate fully with the traffic department in this matter, so as to cause an absolute minimum of interference with traffic. Electors are asked to watch the particulars of a public meeting to be addressed by Mr J. Hodgens and Mr Y. Christensen this month, and which 'will be well advertised in this paper. A more solemn note was struck when mention was made of the recent East Coast railway camp 1 disaster, which cast its shadow over the whole of the Dominion, and a motion expressing the sincere sympathy of Labour supporters for those bereaved by this terrible tragedy was passed in silence.
