OTAGO CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING. YEAR IN REVIEW. The annual meeting of the Otago Club was held on Monday, Mr A. Graham presiding over a good attendance. The report of the secretary-treas-urer (Mr R. J. Wright) on the activities of the past year stated, inter alia: “The year was the seventh of the clah’s- existence and the club can now look back with the feeling that _at last it hjas emerged with colours flying and has become a most necessary part of the civic life of Palmerston North. Now we can look forward convinced that, having weathered the first period of testing so well, wo can and will continue to make progress in the ensuing years. It had been hoped, with the apparent return of prosperity, that the club’s membership would have grown considerably, but this has not been so. The committee are not dismayed at this state of affairs, as wo are of the opinion that the club ably fulfilled its aims during the more difficult periods by affording Otago people the means of meeting one another and binding themselves together, thus affording each, other some measure of support and companionship. The committee hopes that the members will rally round and give the club the support it deserves in the years that lie ahead. At this point, a comparison of financial membership figures may be of interest. This year the number of families represented was 26, the same as last year, but the actual number of members covered by this figure is 43, as against 50 last year. However, the club is in touch altogether with about 100 people who come from Otago. The committee have at all times endeavoured to make members enthusiastic and to offer first-class entertainment at all the club’s functions. Mr A. J. Graham again filled the office of president and under his guidance the committee lias worked during the past year to uphold the traditions of the club and to bring members and their friends togelier under pleasant social conditions.” The report also chronicled the outstanding social functions held by the club “The ladies committee,” it added, under the leadership of Mrs A. G. Beilinson are deserving of special mention for then efforts in providing programmes, arranging the room and tor attending ranging the room and for attending to the catering arrangements. lhe ladies’ committee was as follows. Mesdames A. E. Allen, T. lnglis, G. Skinner, L. Peters, G. Bennison, F. Wilkinson, M. Petrie and K. Clarke. We were honoured in having as our patron for 1937 Dr Ivan Wilson. The president (Mr A. J. Graham) was afforded the support of the vice-presidents (Messrs J. S. Winton, D. Dredge and C. Page). It is with much regret that we have to record the passing of a number of members, and the club s sympathy goes out to the following who suffered bereavement: The President in the loss of his wife, Mrs J. Walker in the loss of her mother, Mrs B. F. Barlow in the loss of her husband, and Mr C. Page in .the loss of his father.” Thanks were expressed to all who had helped the club. The balance-sheet showed that at the beginning of the year the cash in hand totalled £l2 4s. A loss of £1 2s was shown on the year’s working.
