Received February 26, 11 a.m. RUGBY, Eeb. 25. The remarkable response ' last year among young men eligible for service as pilots in the Royal Air Force to the announcement of the increased number of vacancies to be filled as the result of the Government air defence expansion programme has been not only equalled, but beaten, this year, when the number of vacancies was again larger. The Air Ministry announces that although the number of pilots required by the Royal Air Force during the present year, which ends on March 31, had reached a total of 1750, the whole of that .number had been obtained by the end of January. Of this total approximately 1300 had been accepted from candidates from civil life and the balance, in accordance with normal policy, are selected from volunteers froni serving airmen in the Royal Air Force. The total number of pilots who have been entered since the expansion began in 1935 now exceeds 4500.
