COURAGEOUS ACT.
REWARDED BY KING. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Feb. 24. The gallant action of Private J. E. Mott, of the First Battalion, Essex Regiment, in picking up a live bomb, which had been thrown into a crowded cafe at Haifa on Christmas Day, and throwing it into the street, where it exploded, has been rewarded. The War Office announces that the King has approved the award of the Medal of the British Empire, Military Division, for gallantry. The announcement stated that the Jordania Cafe in Haifa was crowded with soldiers and civilians when the bomb was thrown among ‘them. Private Mott, who was seated at a table with some other men of his battalion, picked up the bomb and hurled it through a window into the street, where it exploded with great violence. Private Mott’s courageous act undoubtedly saved several lives and prevented injuries to many of his companions.
