RANGITIKEI CUP PROSPECTS. (By "Spectator.") Old Surrey, Mr L. H. Collinson's geld; ing, who is engaged in the Rangitikei Cup, next week, ran a splendid mile on tli© plough at Awapuni yesterday. Ho ran the first three furlongs in 37sec, the first gix 'in 1.16 1-5 and completed tho journey in 1.44 3-5. He was stopping a little oyer the concluding part. Good Record to Date. The three-year-old Ajax has had nine win 3 and three second placings in 13 starts, and his stake winnings amount to £13,295. Interesting Duel. L. J. Ellis and C. Goulsbro are at present having a close tussle for tho riding premiership. Before the AVaikato meeting commenced, they were equal with 44 wins each, and with four wins at Te Rapa against three by Goulsbro, Ellis ie now leading by 48 to 47. Both horsemen will be riding at the Te Aroha meeting, and from now onwards their fortunes will bo followed with much interest. Work at Te Rapa. Features of the work at Te Rapa yesterday were a brilliant three furlongs by Tosh, a fast half-mile by Royal Bachelor, and a solid round by the Hemes Memorial candidates Master Brierly and Sinking Fund. A solid round was that of the Hemes Memorial Cup candidates Master Brierly (J. Winder) and Sinking Fund (H. Long), who finished practically on terms at the completion of their effort in 1.59, their first five furlongs being run in 1.7 1-5, and tho final half-mile in 51 4-5. It was a useful trial on tho part of both horses, who should strip well for their Cup engagements on Saturday.
