ITALIAN EXPLORERS

VALUE OF WORK STRESSED. LONDON, Feb. 15. Claims on behalf of Italian exploration are being made as part of Italy’s propaganda- campaign. Raking over the events of four and five centuries ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published a large and elaborate work by Professor Almagia, entitled “Italians the First Explorers of America.” It is designed to show that Italians discovered and explored almost the whole of the eastern coast of Labrador to Patagonia. The claims are based oii( the voyages of Columbus, Vespucci, Cabot and Verrazano, although they were admittedly made in the service of Britain, Spain and France. Professor Almagia asserts that Columbus discovered the movement of the Pole Star round the Pole, which was known to navigators a century earlier. He repeats the assertion that Columbus discovered the deviation of the compass. The British Council has already decided to issue a series setting out the work done by great. British explorers. Other books will be written by distinguished experts. The execution of the plans in hand will take two years.
