TEST FOR ENGINES.
HOSED WHILE WORKING. LONDON, Feb. 4. An indication of the severity of the tests to which British aeroplane engines are submitted was given by an
official of the British Society of Aircraft Constructors, Limited. Novel tests at the Bristol Company’s works prove the ability of the Pegasus aircooled engine to run smoothly in rainstorms of tropical severity. An engine of the type installed in the Short Empire four-engined flyingboats operated by Imperial Airways has been mounted in a special teststand and fitted with an airscrew. A
large spray-nozzle of the watering-can type has been erected immediately, in front of and above the airscrew hub, and with it tlie engine Has been flooded "with water at the rate of 120 gallons an hour for long periods. It has run without trouble. More than 150 Pegasus engines have already been ih- [ stalled in Imperial Airways’ fleet of Empire flying-boats.
