KING REY’S FORM.

A COMFORTABLE WIN. (By “Spectator.”) ■' King Rey, who wou the Storey Memorial at To Rapa, was ridden a perfect race by L. J. Ellis. He was never further away than fourth, and had a nice run on the rails throughout. At the honfe turn he took charge, and though he only won by a neck he did it very easily. This horse is right back to his best, • and though he wall have to carry an extra 51b in the Herries Memorial Cup at To Arolia next Saturday he should again take a lot of heading off, for the distance will not trouble him, especially in his present condition. Courtcraft Goes North,

The three-year-old Courtcraft left Woodville yesterday to fulfil his engaments at the Te Aroha Jockey Club s meeting. Courtcraft, who is to contest the Waihou Handicap on Saturday, has been sprinting well, and is reported to be well forward. Horowhenua Leased.

Horowlienua has been leased to Mr W. G. Stephens. His last race was in the Cornwall Handicap at the Great Northern meeting in June, when, with his bracket-mate, Tooley Street, lie was favourite, but ran much below expectations.

Jockeys For Te Aroha. Riding engagements for the first day of the Te .Arolia Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday include :—G. Gilchrist: Kelly, Eleetwind, First Gold, Bonny Gay R W. McTavish: Kilonsa. Her last four successes have been in the colours of hei owner, Mrs C. B. Gill, Waharoa. P 1 to that she was raced on lease by Mr O. Disley, Wellington. An Easter Prospect. Janet Gay nor is just the type of mare to win a Great Easter Handicap, providing that she repeats the form she has shown on occasions, says an exchange. Possessing a great turn of speed and capable of running seven furlongs out solidly, she will be one of the early favourites if nominated for tlie race this Easter. Golden Flame. The two-year-old Golden Flame, who was considered an A.J.C. Gimcrack Stakes prospect in Sydney in the spring, but was unable to start, owing to meeting with an injury, has rejoined H. E. Russell’s active team at Woodviile. The full-sister to Golden Wings has done well during her spell, and if she trains on will be included in Russell’s team for Sydney in the autumn. Not Retired.

As a rule English Derby winners are retired at the end of their tluee-year-old careers, this in order to avoid the possibility of defeat at four lessening their stud value. However, Mrs Miller, owner of last year’s Derby winner, Mid-day Sun, is going to race him this season. His main objective -is the Ascot Gold Cup, which Lady Zia Wernlier won last year with Precipitation. Engagements For Hokitika. Riding engagements made for tomorrow’s programme at Hokitika include the following:—A. E. Ellis: Wine Card, Silver Ring or Wino, Royal Amphora. G. Ms Humphries: Owlsgleam. A. Messervy,; Copyist, Malvasia, Gilford. H. W. Hibberd: Financiere, Swordstick, Invoice. C. T. Wilson: Elmarch, Arrowrose. A. G. Parsons: Maroha, Rotokino, Acceptable, Culverden.

A Good Two-Year-Old. The Australian-bred Calorie came from a long way back in the Juvenile Handicap at Te Rapa to beat Hot Box. At the turn she was not sighted, but she finished in very solid fashion to gain the decision by a neck. This filly, who had previously won, is by Caledon from Lady Rawson, and by the manner in which she lias finished on in her races it looks as though she will stay well as a three-year-old. Her sire is by Hurry On, who produced Hunting Song, while her dam, Lady Rawson, is a half-sis-ter to Polytheist and All Sunshine, who raced prominently in Australia. Hot Box put up a good performance to finish second to Calorie. Promising Maidens.

The maidens seen out at the Waikato meeting were a fairly good class, and there was some promising material among them. Wmderess, winner of the Trial Stakes, was always prominent, and lie stayed on well to get the decision by half a length from Mon Acre. Windcress had previously shown pace in liis races, and now that he has got on the winning list further successes should come his way. He is a fine big gelding and a bold galloper. Mon Acre, who ran second to him, has not had much previous experience, her first start being on this course in November. She was always nicely placed, and only went under by half a length. This novice is in at Te Aroha on urday. She is by Acre from Te Kuini by Marble Areli from Bonnie Fishwife, and thus comes from a good family. Imported Sire’s Death. Bonspiel, who arrived from England only in December to take up stud duties in Queensland, where he was to replape Bomiement at the Canning Downs stud, died a fortight ago from pneumonia. Bonspiel was bred in 1933 by Lord Rosebery, and was a beautifully bred horse by Solario (son of Gainsborough) from Bongrace by Spion Kop (son of Spearmint) from Vaucluse, by Dark Ronald (son of Bay Ronald) froim Valve, by Velasquez from Gas (dam of Cicero) by Ayrshire (son of Hampton) from Illuininata (darn of Ladas and Chelandry) by Rosicrucian. He was a good performer in England and one of his best performances was a second in the Gatwick States at Goodwood to Precipitation, who won the Ascot Gold Cup. Last season lie won the March Stakes at Newmarket, in which he - defeated Boswell, who the previous season had won the Leger and after being defeated by Bonspiel went on to win the Eclipse Stakes.
