OVERSEAS ATHLETES
DISPLAY AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 22. A crowd of over 5000 at Carlaw Park last evening saw the most spectacular athletic meeting held in Auckland for many years. The members of the Canadian Empire Games team were competing against leading Auckland athletes. The track was heavy after rain. The moat popular victories were those of Miss Munro (Auckland) in the ladies' 90yds. hurdles, and S. J. Wade, in the one-mile invitation race. Both Aueklanders rose to the occasion magnificently and defeated the Canadians who had performed well in Sydney. The Auckland ladies' relay team also put up a sterling performance in defeating the Canadian team that was successful in Sydney.
Two New Zealand records were broken by the lady visitors, Miss Higgins throwing the javelin 118 ft. B£in., and Miss Bell clearing st't. ,1 Jin. in the high jump. The outstanding event of the evening, however, was that of John Loaring (Canada) in registering 23 2-5 for the 220yds. hurdles on a curved track.
In the 100yds. men’s scratch race the Aucklanders outclassed the visitors, gaining the lirst three places. Fifteen of Canada’s greatest swimmers and divers, and the Bermuda representative, who took part in the Empire Games, participated at a carnival held by the Auckland Swimming Centre last evening. It. Pir'ie won the 100yds. handicap from scratch in the record time of 52 4-ssec, wltile Miss Oxenbury (Canada) established a New Zealand record of 73 4-ssee. in the 100yds. breaststroke. In the 100 yds. freestyle exhibition Miss Phyllis Dewar (Canada) equalled the Dominion record of 64 4-ssec. In the exhibition breaststroke Miss Joan Langdon (Canada) introduced the “butterfly” stroke to New Zealand.
