CITY WATER SUPPLY.

THE RECENT ANALYSIS. COUNCIL DISCUSSION. More was heard about the municipal water supply at Monday’s meeting of the Palmerston North City Council, when a letter was read from the Health Department (details of which have already been published), stating that an analysis of the water showed that in no sense could it be regarded as injurious to health. Cr J. Hodgens, M.P., said that on the face of it the letter was not very helpful. “It indicates.” he added, “that the samples were taken on December 6, while it was not until after Christmas that complaints were made.” „ The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) explained that further samples of water had been forwarded on January 25, and it was obvious that the department’s reply referred to these samples, there having been some confusion in the date. Cr J. T. J. Heatley desired to know bv whom the samples had been taken. Was it by a Health Department official or by a City Council official? lie asked The engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes): They were taken by Mr J. Lissington, one sample from the resrvoir itself and one from a house from the occupant of which a complaint had been received.

Cr W. B. Cameron endeavoured to pursue the question by criticising certain letters which had appeared in the Press relative to the water, but Ci. Hodgens rose to a point of order. “We are merely discussing this report,” he said., Cr Cameron: The trouble is that some of these correspondents don’t give the whole truth, the River Thames.

The Mayor upheld the point of order and the letter from the Health Department was received. Later in the meeting, when general business was called for, Cr Cameron raised the matter again, and he proceeded to quote from un official document to show that London did not, as had been argued by it Press correspondent, draw its water direct from C Hodgens rose to a point of order again, and the Mayor said that a motion would have to be moved if the discussion was to proceed. Eventually Cr Cameron moved that the works committee _be . given copies of one of the letters in the Press and that they should formulate a reply, and this was carried after some further discussion. .
