CYCLISTS REFUSE.
ANTI-PROFESSIONAL CLAUSE. SURPRISE IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Feb. 4. The New Zealand Empire Games cyclists have created a surprise by flatly refusing to sign an agreement involving a bond of £SO debarring them from turning -professional within two years. *> Frank Grose, however, is reported to have signed the agreement on the voyage to Australia. The remaining six are adamant. They declare that it would have been a different matter had they been informed of the obligation before they left New Zealand, which might have prevented them from undertaking the trip. The spokesman for the team said: “Wo have no thought of turning professional, but we do not think we should be bound down. Also, we resent the fact that the demand comes, not from the New Zealand Empire Games Committee, but from the New Zealand Cyclists’ Association. “We don’t say we won’t ride on Tuesday night. We are all in tip-top form, but even if it means that we will be packed off home, we are determined not to sign.” INSTRUCTIONS AWAITED.
Received February 5, 1.35 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 5. The manager of the New Zealand team (Mr McCormick) cabled the authorities in New Zealand asking for instructions in connection with the cyclists’ refusal to sign a bond not to turn professional. The cyclists’ first race is scheduled for Tuesday night.
