BACK TO FORM.

GRATEFUL COMES RIGHT. WAIPA CUP SUCCESS. (By “Spectator.”) Grateful, who won the Prince of Wales Handicap at the Manawatu autumn meeting two seasons ago, and paid a big price in winning the To Awanmlu Cup on Saturday from a strong field, appears to bo coming right again. His last success was in the Now Plymouth Handicap at the Taranaki meeting last September, but bo lost form in the autumn, and was given a spell at M. Grogan’s stud farm at Wanganui. Grateful finished full of racing to hold off a strong challenge by the Avondale dual winner Hark Shadow, and win going awav by 2j>- lengths. It was- a most attractive effort, and Grateful can be expected to show from now on the form ot nearly two years ago which seemed to indicate that he would develop into a good handicap performer.

Ortyx For Melbourne. Ortyx,. the half-sister to Desert Chief and Gold Trail, will shortly he shipped to Melbourne to join Mr G. J. Barton’s team at Mentone.

Mounts At Ellerslie. S. Wilson, tho Wellington horseman, will" have the mounts on Peerless, The Buzzer, and Joviality at Ellerslie, and will rido Boomerang on the second day at Awapuni. Mounts For L. Dulieu.

Besidos ■ riding King Boy, Impasto. and Rona Bay at the Manawatu meeting, the Ellerslio houseman L. Dulieu will ride some of Mr G. M. Currie’s horses and members of G. New’s team, including Tidewaitcr, at Manawatu.

Foal by Diatomous. First foal by Diatomous, who was a speedy sprinter when raced in tho Manawatu, there is a nico looking young colt at Whangarci. Ho is from Tea Bud, a Tea Tray marc who was never raced, and has impressed by his looks those mho have seen him. Friesland Shows Soreness. „

Friesland, ridden B. H. Morris, was expected to run well in the Te Aivamutu Cup, but ho moved scratchily in his preliminary and never at any stage the race appeared a possibility. Later Friesland was very sore. He was sent back to Hawera, and he may not take his place in the Auckland Cup field. Privy Seal’s Prospects. Privy Seal has not been overtaxed 6incc her success over a mile at Ellerslie last month. She won her race at tho right end on that occasion and gave the impression that a longer journey would not seriously trouble her. This filly is entered for hack events at the Auckland summer meeting, including the Waitemata Handicap, to bo decided on the second day. Is Well Engaged. The racing Kiltowyn had at tho Takapuna meeting evidently did the bay gelding no harm, for he has been galloping attractively in his work since that meeting. Ho also looks an improved horse and gives overy indication of being an early winner. As Kiltowyn figures in the Christmas Handicap on "the first day of tho Auckland meeting’, tho Summer Cup on the second day, tho A.R.C. Handicap on the third day’, and the Grandstand Handicap on the final day, ho will have plenty of opportunities to make good during the fixture at Ellerslie.

Southland Juveniles. Southland stables will bo represented by throe two-year-olds at the Dunedin meeting as follow: Spendthrift, To Monanui Lady Pal colt, and a filly by Irish Lancer from Some Signal. Spendthrift is a member of W. E. Hazlctt’s team and the Paper Money gelding has shaped well in his allotments. The To Monanui colt is a half-brother to a useful winner in Palermo. Ho is a big youngster for his age. but has pleased in his tasks at Riverton. The Irish Lancer filly is also trained at Riverton. She is rather on tho small side, but a good opinion is held of her by track watchers.

Riding Engagements. Additional riding engagements for tho Awapuni meeting are as follow : R. Sargent—Mittie, Terry, Orient Dawn (all third day). F. Latham.— Young Pat. P. Burgess.—Sunee, Rod Sun, Siegmund, I-luntino. W. Doyle.— Trebor, Free Gold. A. Sim.—Quexona. W. Little—Boomerang (first day). S. R. Farland.—Floral Robe. A E. Bennet. —Deficit. J. McCauley.—Brazen King, Lustral, Mother-in-Law. A. Jenkins.—Twilight Song. Retired to Stud. Valiant Chief, one of the most brilliant sprinters in Victoria in recent years, has ended his active career on tho Turf. He won thirteen races and £6753 in stake®. Valiant Chief is a fivo-ycar-old chestnut stallion by Heroic (son of Valais) from Cohesion (imp.). -Ridden by K. Voitre (who broke a log) in the Quality Handicap at Moonee Valley in September last year he fell heavily and. injured a knee so severely thuc ho did not race again for almost twelve months. He recovered and

returned to racing last August, when he won tho Moondah Plato at Caulfield on Australian Hurdle Race Day. However, he has lately been causing his trainct, I. tv. Hovsted, much trouble, and it has been decided to retire him to the stud. Sydney' Winner Engaged. It is no oversight that El Mcynell, who has been racing in Sydney this season, h * been left in the field for ,t ho Great Noithorn Derby on New Years Da.\. “ lb l '" dorstood that he is to bo on hand. El Meyncll is a brown colt by Hunting bong from tho Hallowmas— Bonny Helen mate Haligan, hence ho is a full-biothei to View Halloo and Hark Forrard. At t national sales last year he was passedm at 250gns and subsequently was acquncd b v Mr W. S. Glenn, of Morton, who sent him over to J. T. Jamieson to train at Randwiek. He has recently won twice in Svdnov his latest success being m the Thrco and Four-year-old Handicap at Victoria Park. He ran only twice as a two-year-old and did not make his fust appearance this term till after the big spring mootings. A Good Record. Petersham is unlikely to find the open company ho wilt bo opposed to in the Wyndham Cup beyond him, as his record in recent months is a convincing one (says a southern writer). Ho was placed at the New Zealand Cup meeting' over six iurlongs when he finished third behind Triune and Invoice in 1.12. Prior to the Riccarton carnival ho had won four races on mid and carried big weights in doing so. Ho won a double over seven furlongs at Wingatui with 8.13 and 9.9, while at Uashdyke oiei a mile and 35 yards ho also carried 9.9 and won Later in the meeting and over the same distance ho carried 10.4, when ho beat Recollection (3.2) and Pink Robe (8 3) The Shambles gelding is likely to have little difficulty in seeing out a mile and a quarter, and will be one of the early favourites.
