BAND CONTEST

IN FEBRUARY NEXT. OFFICIALS APPOINTED. At a meeting of the Band Contest Committee held yesterday afternoon arrangements for the contest, which is to be held in Palmerston North during February, were advanced a further step. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) was in the chair. . Mr H. E. Bergersen wrote offering to donate a medal to be known as the Gordon Bergersen memorial, taking the form of a shield with a trumpet across the face. The donor suggested that it be awarded for the most points gained in the championship cornet solo. In accepting the trophy with thanks the committee agreed to this suggestion. It was decided to hold the solo competitions in the Opera House, and the civic reception at the Showgrounds. The secretary submitted a report which stated, inter alia:—Medals: I have arranged with a local manufacturing jeweller to submit to me « design and specification immediately after the holidays, and I would suggest that tenders be called from the local jewellers on such design, the number required being 21 gold and 21 silver. Owing to the increased value of gold, I anticipate the cost of_ tne medals will be approximately £65, as estimated. I would suggest that a small sub-committee be set up to canvass for donations to the medal fund early in the New Year. Halls and practice grounds: Until the number of competing bands is definitely available it is impossible to arrrange for halls and pr a truce grounds. It is proposed to allocate a hall to each band handy to its hotel in case of rain, and also w arrange for a suitable outdoor practice ground, and I would suggest that the matter be left to the sub-committee. A preliminary survey shows that ample accommodation will be available. Quickstep grounds: A roster is being prepared which will give each band two periods of an hour on the Showgrounds oval for quickstep practice. By the utilisation of the Sportsground, Milverton Park and the Technical School grounds each band can obtain an additional six hours’ practice, whilst isoe utilisation of two further areas at the Showgrounds, Takaro, and Te rrt.ee End parks, etc., will give all bands amnle practice grounds. I would suggest that the solo events be lield in the Opera House and the Municipal Hall. Demonstration concert: I would suggest that this be held at the Showgrounds on the Saturday night. Officials: The following officials have been appointed by the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association: Judge, Mr.E. V. Kerry; assistant, Mr T. Goodall; supervisor, Mr W. P. MacLachlan; assistant, Mr A. G. Homer. A number of matters were deferred for final consideration at the first meeting in January, when the work will be considerably expedited. A programme for the week was approved.
