GLASS BEVELLERS
AWARD ANNOUNCED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. Dec. 21. Glass bevellers and leadlight workers in the Northern Wellington, Canterbury and Otago-Southland industrial districts are affected by an award of the second Court of Arbitration issued to-day. The clauses covering wages, employment of youths, holidays and cycle allowance, which were the principal matters referred to the Court, are as follow : . Minimum rate of wages to be paid to glass bevellers, silverers, polishers and cutters (other than for glazing purposes) and leadlight workers (other than leadlight cementere) shall be 2s 9d an hour; leadlight cementers shall be paid not less than 2s 5d an hour. Glass bevelling shall include roughing smoothing, pumicing, roughing, drilling, mitreing and brilliant cutting. Workers using sand-blast shall be paid at the rate of ljd per hour extra while so engaged, and helmet and sufficient safeguards shall be provided by, the employer. _ , . , The provisions of the Factories Act and its amendments relating to holidays and Sunday payments shall be deemed to be included in the award. Should any of the specified holidays ex cept Anzac Day fall on a Sunday then, for the purpose of ihe award, such holiday shall be observed on the following Monday. . Youths may be employed in any factory or workshop as cementers or at other work, but not at lead-glazing or <dass-cutting, at the following ratesj. £1 os at 15 years of age, rising by 5s half-yearly to £2 5s at 1/ ; f 2 l? s ,r£ at 18s, rising by 10s yearly to £5 12s 6d at 20. One youth may be employed to every three or fraction of three adult workers employed in a factory or workshop provided that no youth shall be employed at cementing unless at least one a.dult cementer is employed. No deduction shall be made from tne weekly wages specified except for time lost through the worker’s sickness or default, or his absence from work through' no fault of the employer. Workers who are required at the request of the employer or worker in authority to use their own cycles (ordinary or motor) during the course of their work shall be paid 6d for each day or part of a day on which they use the same. . , . „„„ The award is to come into force on Januarv 1 and will operate until Li cember 21, 1938.
