CHRISTMAS MAILS.
POST OFFICE ACTIVITY. RUSH STARTS EARLY. Heavy mails are expected to be handled by the Post Office at Palmeiston North before Christmas, due to the public spending more freely and posting presents earlier than was the case last year. Activities have been very brisk this week, though normally the real rush does not start until about four days before Christinas. A big Australian and English mail arrived by the Awatea’ on Monday, and was followed on Tuesday by another English mail via Vancouver, from the Niagara. One hundred and ninety bags of English papers were sorted at this centre for distribution in Palmerston North, Feilding, Wairapara, Hawke’s Bay, and Gisborne districts. From Monday until Friday next tfie Post Office at Palmerston North will carry an augmented staff to deal with the final rush. Fifteen additional boys will assist the postmen’s branch, the messenger staff will be increased by four, and the mail staff by six officers. The ordinary mail staff will, in addition, work double shifts.
