FOXTON RESORT.
BEACH IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Dec. 16. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board a deputation, comprising Messrs R. O. Ilornblow, G. Watchorn, O. Coles and J. Graham, waited on tho board on behalf of tho Reach Improvement Society with a request for assistance, financial and otherwise. Mr Ilornblow referred to the popularity of the resort and said that it was growing daily. In the past the board had granted the society the camp site fees which it collected free of charge to the board. Recently, however, it had been indicated at board meetings that there was a possibility of the fees being diverted into the general funds. If such action was taken the society would be unable to continue. As it was, with the camp site fees, it was unable to keep up the maintenance of the beach, which had been slipping back owing to the cancellation of relief work. Mr Coles said that the position had been aggravated by reason of the fact that the No. 5 Scheme had been cancelled at the beach. Mr Watchorn said he considered the Foxton Beach was the best beach on tho coast and it was the society’s desire to make it even better. The great difficulty, was, however, that the society had no assured means of finance and it desired an assurance in this connection from the board. Mr M. E. Perreau, speaking as a member of the society, referred to that body’s financial commitments and the necessity for financial assistance from the hoard. The chairman (Mr J. Einklater) said he fully realised the necessity for the board doing something. “The society lias done great work,” he said, “and wo are willing to help you, but finance is our trouble. Do you think you would be able to carry on if 'you were granted the camp site fees again ?” The deputation, having stated its case, withdrew, when the board considered its requests The chairman pointed out that if the society was not functioning the board would be faced with doing the work itself. —It was decided to grant the society the camp site fees for the ensuing year and the secretary was instructed to communicate with tho certifying officer to see if the work of cutting fire breaks through the plantation could be carried out under the No. 13 scheme, and if so .to put the work in hand immediately. . ,
