CROCHETED HAT AND PURSE.

MAKE AN IDEAL GIFT. Materials.—Three-quarters yard of 1 inch tape, a 7-incli zipper, 4 balls fftr hat and two balls for the purse, of mercerised crochet cotton No. G and steel crochet hook. Abbreviations. —Ch. chain, sc. single crochet, dc double crochet, si st slip stitch, st stitch, sk skip. To simplify instructions the above diagram should be closely followed; the letter A corresponds with the bottom centre of the purse. Note. —Iu making both hat and purse, use 2 strands of the thread throughout. PURSE. (About 6J x 7i inches.) On all the rows, work in back threads of sts of previous row. With 2 strands of cotton make ch 3. • Ist row. —Put 3 sc in 3rd ch from hook. Pull beginning threads tight and fasten (A on diagram). 2nd row. —Ch. 2 turn. Put 1 sc in Ist sc, 3 sc in centre • st, 1 sc in last st. 3rd row.—Ch 2 turn. Put 1 sc. in each st. of row below, with 3 sc in the centre st.

4th to 30th rows. —Same as 3rd row, bringing work to B on diagram. 31st row. —Ch 2, turn. Work across 30 sts. - 1

32nd row. —Ch 2, turn. Sk Ist sc, put 1 sc in each remaining st of row. 33rd row. —Ch 2, turn. Put 1 sc in each st of row below but omit last st. Alternate 32nd and 33rd rows twice, thus working straight at D of diagram, and reducing Ist every row at B.

From 38th row on, reduce 1 st at each end every row until all sts are worked off —F on diagram. Repeat at other side from B‘to C, finishing at E. Attach, thread at A, and work along straight edge, from A to D putting 1 so at end of every row (38 sc). Then work as before, putting 1 sc in each st of row below and reducing 1 st at each and every row till all sts are worked off—H on diagram. Repeat along edge A to C to fill in corner to G, thus completing one side of purse. Make a similar piece for other side. The edge E to F shows top of purse. Finishing—Sew the 2 pieces together along the sides and bottom edge ; attach the zipper along the top and use a lining of some strong materia). HAT -BRIM. With 2 strands of cotton make ch 22. _ .. 1 st. row. —Begin in 2nd ch from hook, put 1 sc in each st of foundation ch. 2nd row. —Ch 1, turn. Put Isc in back threads of each st of the row below. Repeat 2nd row till brim is two inches longer than head size; then, without breaking thread, work down one of the long sides with a row of puff sts. Puff st.—Make ch 3, put 1 sc in end of Ist row, thread over hook, insert hook in space between ch and sc just made, (”) draw a loop through; (“ ”) thread over hook, insert hook in same place and draw loop through; repeat from (“ ”) twice, making 9 loops on hook, thread over and draw through all 9 loops on hook. Thread over and draw through to fasten. Sk the end of 1 row, put 1 sc in end of next row* thread over, insert honk between last puff and sc just made, repeat from (”) for the length of the brim edge, then finish. CROWN. With 2 strands of cotton make ch 3. Put 6 sc in 3rd ch from hook, pull beginning thread tight and fasten. Then working round and round, through both threads at top of sts below, put 2 sc in each st of the Ist rnd, then on the subsequent rnds, put 1 sc in each st. and increase 1 st at 6 different places each row. Avoid making increases above increases of rnd below to keep crown round. When edge measures the same as head size, stop increasing and continue with 1 st in each st until the crown is the desired depth, then finish off. FINISHING. Cut tape the exact head size, with i inch additional for joining. Then sew along bottom, on inside of brim, jf of an inch from the edge, easing in the fullness all round. Then sew the two ends together. Try on the crown and put. the brim over it and adjust to a becoming angle and pin in place. Then sew.
