PLUNKET SOCIETY. NEW ROOMS - BEING BUILT. The new Plunket rooms which had been the ambition of the Feilding Plunket Society are now assuming definite shape, and it is anticipated that the building will be ready for occupai tion early in the new year, marking ’ an important step in the history of . the society here and exemplifying the value placed on its activities by its supporters, who have responded to the appeal for donations in a commendable and liberal manner. LYTTON STREET SCHOOL. ADDITIONAL PUPILS. The Lytton Street School absorbed the Awnliuri and Makino school pupils under the Education Board’s centralisation scheme, during the year. The Taonui School, owing to a strong protest, has so far escaped becoming part of Lytton Street School. METHODIST CHURCH NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL. The year 1937 has marked an important step in the progress of the Methodist Church. Its jubilee was celebrated and finance raised for a new Sunday school, the building of which is almost completed. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. During the year the Feilding Acclimatisation Society, which had been functioning successfully for a number of years, joined forces with the parent body and is now a sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. The Feilding Society, in amalgamating with Wellington, handed over its funds amounting to about £3OO. TOWN HALL PROPOSAL. Schemes for a hew town hall for Feilding have been advanced at a number of meetings held during the year, and a plebiscite of ratepayers was taken. The result negatived the proposal and the matter has not since been revived as a subject for discussion. KIMBOLTON ROAD CROSSINGSince the Borough Council and the Chamber of Commerce entered strong protests to the Railway Department regarding its proposal to build a ramp over the Ivinibolton Road railway crossing, nothing further has . been heard about the matter and it is hoped that the scheme has been abandoned. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. _ Under the able guidance of the president (Mr A. J. Humphreys) the monthly meetings of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce have been interesting and very helpful in matters of general importance to the borough’s business activities arid the town in general. It ha 6 voiced a strong protest against the proposed ramp over the Ivinibolton Road railway crossing and debated the town hall proposal, as well as dealing with other contentious subjects in the interests of the business community it represents. FEILDING HIGH SCHOOL During the absence of the headmaster (Mr L. J. Wild), who has been abroad, for a lengthy period, the Feilding Agricultural High School lift'* been conducted under the able guidance of Mr C. B. McClure, in co-ope-ration with the Board of Managers under the chairmanship of Mr J. Knight, whose generosity and keen interest in the school are well-known and widely appreciated. New buildings have been added to accommodate the ever increasing number of pupils, while at present the framework of further buildings is being erected. The number of boarders at the school this year constitutes a record, and enrolments for next year already received are heavy and threaten to tax the additional accommodation to its utmost. The first issue of the new “people’s gas mask’’ is announced in Berlin. Beards “if not longer than a hand” can be worn under the mask. The price will be 7s 6d, but will be reduced for poor people.
