THE YULE LOG.

It used to be the custom for country people to go out on Christmas Day and bring home the largest log they could find. It was often so big that men and boys used to haul it with ropes. It was taken to the house of the lord of the Manor and there burned on the great open hearth. Some lords allowed their tenants to feast at their own expense until the log had burned away.
