WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

MEETING AT LINTON. \At the December meeting of the Linton Women's Institute Mrs E. Harrison presided. It was decided that the January meeting take the form of a picnic. Afternoon tea was served by Mcsdames Algie and Mullins and Miss V. Rix. Mrs T. Lynch, past-president, took the opportunity of presenting to Mrs Harrison and Miss E. Young (secretary) a bouquet of roses and a dainty posy, both returning thanks. The competition was a roll call, “Where I would like to spend a fortnight’s holiday,” Mrs J. L. Nash giving the best explanation of a holiday spent in Napier. Visitors were Misses M. ahd J. Mead. The children's Christmas party in connection with the Institute was held on Friday afternoon, being a very happy gathering. The children were taken in hand by an ex-teacher of the local school (Mrs 11. Currin), who kept them well* occupied by playing games, etc., accompanied by Sirs Jos. Batch clar at the piano. Afternoon tea was handed round with soft drinks, after which each child received a dip in the bran tub and a. bag of sweets. —Linton correspondent. A OKAUTERE INSTITUTE. At the meeting of the Women’s Institute Mrs Groves presided over a good attendance. One now member, Mrs Mackie, was welcomed. The treasurer (Mrs Riddle) road the balance-sheet for the flower show -last month and it was pleasing to know that there was a substantial increase over last year’s show. Members were reminded that there will be no meeting next month, and that the February meeting will bo bold at the Esplanade. Nominations for next year’s committee will bn / received at the February meeting. The president expressed sympathy to Mrs S. Gilslman, whose house was recently burnt down and asked her to accept a large collection of jams and preserves. The competition for “the best bloom” svas again well supported and resulted: Miss I. .Anderson 1, Mrs Chowcn 2, Miss C. Field 3. The competition for the best Christmas gift, costing not more than Is 6d, was judged by Mrs Munro, the winner of the senior division being Mrs Brungar and the junior division Miss T. Lankshcar. The demonstrator was Mrs Munro, of Palmerston North, and members wore appreciative of her demonstration of “Fagotting.” Johnny Riddle sang and later members joined in the singing of Christmas carols, Mrs Riddle being the accompaniste. TVe hostesses were Mcsdames L. Atkinson, S. Lankshoar and Miss C. Field. —Aokautcre correspondent. ! ASHHURST INSTITUTE. The December meeting of the Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs B. Fairlcss. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Neale. Mrs Fairless gave a welcome to all and extended the season’s greetings. A letter of appreciation was received from the secretary of the leper patients for the gifts sent. Sympathy with Mrs Tunnicliffc in her recent bereavement was expressed. A committee was formed'to attend the annual picnic during January, the chosen spot being up the river near the Raumai bridge. The programme is to be provided solely by the children; Misses Marie Wilkin and Irene Woodroofc are in charge of the entertainment. A demonstration on cake decorating was given by Mcsdames T. Baton and J. 11. -Sumner; both ladies were accorded a vote of thanks. The competition for a Christmas novelty resulted: Mrs Flowers 1 Miss Dobson 2, Mrs Bleakly 3; Mvcct pea, Mrs A. Currie 1, Mies Dobson 2. Mrs Bleakly 3; junior class. Miss M. Wilkin 1- best flower in the garden. Mrs Brockie 1, Miss Dobson 2. The hostesses at afternoon tea -were Mcsdames Iloucis and Pa loi i. Miss Voulo and Miss Woodroofc Ashhuret correspondent.
